Across a crowded Los Angeles ballroom, Evan notices Chloe listening differently from everyone else. She isn’t interested in market forecasts. She’s deciding whether anything he says could actually help the children in her classroom.

Their attraction begins with a look across the room and grows through an elevator encounter, cocktails, conversation, and an unexpected walk along the California coast. But Los Angeles is temporary. Chloe returns to Wilmington and her classroom; Evan returns to the increasingly consuming work of bringing Lantern to life. Neither expects their connection to survive the distance.
